Uproar After "Survivor" Contestant Is Outed as Transgender

Survivor Greece: Ολόκληρο το συμβούλιο και η αποχώρηση του Χανταμπάκη 11/4/2017

No matter how heartfelt the outrage was, the controversy itself was premeditated. The Survivor episode was filmed months ago and the producers and CBS had a choice to make about whether to air the footage outing Mr. Smith on national television.

Once the decision to do so was made, Mr. Smith and his defenders prepared responses in the time before the broadcast of the episode. Several opinion columns on the matter were even written in advance, in effect highlighting the outing and stoking the reactions. And some critics have subsequently placed the blame with CBS, for airing it.

Mr. Smith himself wrote a column for The Hollywood Reporter published on Wednesday night, timed to the broadcast of the episode, and he also spoke to People about the episode.

When I got on a plane to Fiji last March, I expected to get voted out third, Mr. Smith, who is an asset manager in Brooklyn, wrote in The Hollywood Reporter. Id return home, laugh at my misadventure, and go about my life, casually trans in the same way that Zac Efron is casually Jewish.

He continued: In calling me deceptive, Varner invoked one of the most odious stereotypes of transgender people, a stereotype that is often used as an excuse for violence and even murder. In proclaiming Zeke is not the guy you think he is, and that there is deception on levels yall dont understand, Varner is saying that Im not really a man and that simply living as my authentic self is a nefarious trick. In reality, by being Zeke the dude, I am being my most honest self.

Reaction poured in.

Zeke Smith, and transgender people like him, are not deceiving anyone by being their authentic selves, and it is dangerous and unacceptable to out a transgender person, Nick Adams, an official with Glaad, the group formerly known as the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, said in a statement. It is heartening, however, to see the strong support for Zeke from the other people in his tribe. Moments like this prove that when people from all walks of life get to know a transgender person, they accept us for who we are.

Glaad said it had worked with Mr. Smith and CBS; the episode was not broadcast live.

Viewers were unforgiving.

The worst, cruelest moment ever on Survivor, one wrote on Twitter.

Stunned, another fumed. Cant believe anyone would take it to that level.

Mr. Varner, a real estate agent from High Point, N.C., published an apology to his Facebook and Twitter accounts shortly after the episode aired.

Yep. I did that, he wrote. And I offer my deepest, most heartfelt apologies to Zeke Smith, his friends and life allies, his family, and to all those who my mistake hurt and offended. I recklessly revealed something I mistakenly believed everyone already knew. I was wrong and make no excuses for it. I own responsibility in what is the worst decision of my life.

He added, Let me be clear, outing someone is assault.

Mr. Probst, who has hosted the American version of the show since its inception in 2000, told Entertainment Weekly that this was a unique event. In 34 seasons of Survivor, I have rarely, if ever, personally commented on what is said or done in the game, he said. I cannot imagine anyone thinking what was done to Zeke was O.K. on any level, under any circumstances, and certainly not simply because there was a million dollars on the line.

Some on social media pointed out that CBS could have chosen not to air the segment. No Probst, you told millions of people. #survivor, the recent contestant Max Dawson wrote on Twitter. Another former contestant, Eliza Orlins said on Twitter that including the outing moment was unavoidable. No way to edit around it. Yikes.

(Two spokeswomen for the show did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.)

On the old Macy"s rooftop, they "broke ground" for the new MN Wild practice rink

Wild show off speed with three goals in less than two minutes

Standing on the rooftop of Treasure Island Center the former Macys Department Store in downtown St. Paul Minnesota wild owner craig leipold proclaimed the teams future 1,200-seat practice rink a draw for professional free agents, youth teams, college hockey players and the general public alike.

We hope to be playing hockey into June, said Leipold, addressing a sizable audience gathered Tuesday for the rink groundbreaking six floors above Cedar and Wabasha streets.

When the Tria Rink opens in November, the Wild who piece together practice time in metro rinks as far flung as Edina will finally be able to consolidate ice time in one location. Theyll practice a couple of hours each morning, allowing schools, amateur leagues and hockey clinics to rent slots through the day.

The Tria Rink, named after an orthopedic division of HealthPartners that also employs the team physician, will be open year-round, up to 15 hours a day, as a result of a joint venture between the St. Paul Port Authority and the Minneapolis-based Hempel Cos.

Randy McKay, a principal with the Hempel Cos., said Hamline University mens and womens hockey teams hope to use the rink for home games and practices, though an agreement isnt finalized.

He said other uses for the massive, blocklong department store building will begin opening shop by September. Six leases have been signed, with additional tenants in the wings. Among them, Stacked Deck Brewing formerly Looney Bin Brewing will occupy four large glass bay garage doors along Cedar Street.

Theyre going to be making Cedar Street interesting again, McKay said.

The Minnesota Housing Finance Agency will situate more than 200 employees in 61,000 square feet of office space directly beneath the rooftop ice rink. Elsewhere in the building, aTria Orthopaedic medical clinic and the St. Paul Police Department will have a presence, as well.

Capital Real Estate bought space on the ground floor and skyway for a two-level Walgreens store off Wabasha Street. Next to it on ground level, a Tim Hortons doughnuts and coffee shop will soon lure passersby.

Major changes to the buildings concrete exterior are readily visible along Wabasha Street. Jamie Spencer, a vice president with the Wild who helped shepherd the practice facility into reality, said large panels of illuminated glass will soon rise above the roof line, almost like a lantern for the city at night.

St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman said Rice Park and Mears Park have long anchored downtown, but the spaces between them suffered from disinvestment. Coleman pointed to Metro Transits Green Line light rail, the newly-opened Palace Theatre and now Treasure Island Center as fresh opportunities to connect the dots.

This was not an easy project to do, said Coleman, who recalled failed efforts to attract developers after Macys vacated the space in 2013.

When the state of Minnesota suggested the vacant department store could house a sizable outpatient treatment facility for s*x offenders, Coleman recalled making a quick phone call to the St. Paul Port Authority with other ideas in mind.

Rather than situate s*x offender treatment next to the Minnesota Childrens Museum, maybe the Port Authority could step in and buy the building from Macys instead?

Louis is rarely speechless, said Coleman on Tuesday, recalling the discussion with former Port Authority CEO Louis Jambois.

On Tuesday, hockey fans, business leaders and members of the development community got their first glimpse of the result, still under construction.

Coleman, Leipold and McKay were joined by Port Authority president Lee Krueger and Jessie Stomski Seim, general counsel for the Prairie Island Indian Community, which recently bought the naming rights for Treasure Island Center for an undisclosed sum.

Krueger recalled broaching the possibility of a professional hockey practice facility with developers, who told him the chance of success was 20 percent.

Half tongue in cheek, he responded: So youre telling me theres a chance? He then thanked Jambois for not firing me when I brought this project to him.

The Hempel Cos. also needed some convincing. Coming up with the idea of a rink on top of a roof it was almost outlandishly crazy, McKay said. Once I heard of it, I said good luck.

Edy Tavares Named RidiculousUpside"s Defensive Player of the Year

EDY TAVARES HIGHLIGHTS DLEAGUE 2017 NEW CAVALIER!

In a league thats dominated by uber-athletic shooting guards and small forwards, its strange to see a big man thats able to just dominate in the NBA D-League. While that pattern is also evident in the NBA, its more glaring in the D-League as there hasnt been a single big thts been given a major NBADL award (Rookie of the Year, MVP Defensive Player of the Year) since the 2010-11 season. However, that changes with former Raptors 905 big Walter Tavares.

From the moment that the Raptors 905 acquired 73 center Tavares off waivers on November 13th, he immediately stood as one of the more intriguing prospects in the entire D-League. Of course, a lot of that intrigue was due to Tavares standing at 73 while possessing an incredible 79 wingspan, which immediately put him as one of the tallest players in league. In addition to that awe-inspiring frame, Tavares showed incredible mobility on the defensive end, which gave him tremendous potential as a shot-blocker.

While a lot of players just shrink when the attention is directed on them, Tavares stood as a spectacular defensive weapon once he landed in Mississaugua. In Jerry Stackhouses great defensive system that featured a slew of defensive-minded wings and forwards, Tavares was immediately able to fit right in. From the jump, Tavares just looked extremely comfortable, whether he was just standing in the paint or working his way towards the perimeter to defend pick-and-rolls.

Tavares incredible mobility immediately became his best trait as he was actually able to go out and defend against guards or forwards without becoming a burden. Although that tremendous wingspan definitely helps, Tavares quick feet was able to stop any kind of pick-and-roll opportunity that the opposing squad may even think that they possibly had. An example of Tavares ability to hedge on pick-and-rolls is seen in the play below where he sticks with Pistons rookie Henry Ellenson from the perimeter to the paint.

Those quick feet also helps Tavares out when hes working inside the paint as a rim protector. His mobility combined with his huge 78 wingspan allowed Tavares to be the most feared inside presence in the entire D-League. The fear of opposing squads was due to him averaging a league-high 2.7 blocks per game in only 27 minutes per game. Tavares block party was headlined by him blocking 12 shots in a late March matchup against the Erie Bayhawks.

Tavares great work on the defensive end was also evident when you look at on/off numbers. Opponents averaged nearly seven points per 100 possessions less when tavares was on the court (97.9 points per 100) compared to when he was sitting on the sidelines (104.4 points per 100).

Those traits allowed Tavares to play a vital role in the NBDLs best defense while also pushing them to an incredible 39-11 record. Taking all of that into consideration, theres no doubt that Edy Tavares has allowed himself to be named as Ridiculous Upsides Defensive Player of the Year for the 2016-17 D-League season.

Runner-up for RUs DPOY award: Alex Caruso - Oklahoma City Blue. Stood as arguably the best on-ball defender in the NBADL as he averaged 2.1 steals per game during his rookie season

Pittsburgh Penguins Injure Their Own Goalie During Warm Ups.

Pittsburgh Penguins vs New York Rangers NHL Game Recap

You see it every time before a game, teams warming up shooting rather light shots or doing some small stick handling techniques to the net to get in the groove and have their goalie focused, well the Pittsburgh Penguins thought it would be smart before their first playoff game on Wednesday to try and dangle goaltender Matthew Murray out of his equipment forcing him to slide across the crease. Now, this is absolutely foolish, youre in the playoffs, you have a solid number one since Marc-Andre Fleury has been shaky all year and the first thing you do is pull some fancy dangle and force your cold goalie to make a save on it?

Mar 21, 2017; buffalo, ny, usa; pittsburgh penguins goalie Matt Murray (30) against the Buffalo Sabres at KeyBank Center. Mandatory Credit: Timothy T. Ludwig-USA TODAY Sports

This resulted in Murray having to leave the warm up immediately with a lower-body injury, and if you watch it its a groin injury which means he could be out this entire first round. But for the sake of the Pens, they need to pray that hes out for a game or two. Cause, in all honesty, they need him in net rather than Fleury. And dont get me wrong Fleury is solid, but not as solid as he used to be.

Matthew Murray has had a tremendous season with a record of 32-10-4 in 47 games with a .923 save percentage and a 2.41 goals-against-average. Fleury, on the other hand, had a record of 18-10-7 in 34 games with a .909 save percentage and a 3.02 goals-against-average. Do you see now why you dont go all out in warmups? Because youre gonna lose someone important 10 times out of 10. And Im sure the Pens faithful feel the exact same way, play smart, not aggressive.

Heres the video incase you missed it.

Black Ops 2 grosses $1 billion in just 15 days

Call of Duty Black Ops 2 on Xbox One Gameplay! (Backwards Compatible)

As is now the tradition, Activision announced today that the latest game in the Call of Duty franchise made... kind of a lot of money. Black Ops 2 grossed (places pinky at corner of mouth) one billion dollars in 15 days, hitting the mark a day faster than its predecessor, Modern Warfare 3.

While regional prices vary, dividing that by the U.S. sticker price of $59.99 gives us about 16.7 million units sold, which is roughly equal to the population of the Netherlands. You can read Activision"s full press release here , and check out our video critique of Black Ops 2 and the official review to help you decide whether you want to be #16,700,001.

Levine: Could The Cubs Score 900 Runs? Analytics Department Projects Big Numbers

4/14/16: The Cubs score eight runs to complete sweep

By Bruce Levine

MESA, Ariz. (CBS) Theres a numberfor us to consider for the Cubs as the new season sits less than two weeks away: 900.

Thats a number of runs that could be in play for the team to score in 2017.The 900-run mark is certainly a big number, as it projects to just shy of 5.6 runs per game, but its not without context.

Thats a magical figure on the mind ofthe Cubs geek squad of sabermetric experts. Manager Joe Maddon gave that group of bright minds the think-tank assignment of projecting the Cubs best lineups for scoring maximum runs. Specifically, Maddon was interested in the projections with slugger Kyle Schwarber as the lead-off hitter.

This is just another tool in the tool box, Maddon said of using analytics. We felt in Tampa that we had some better options. We had a lot of discussions about (metrics). It was more nouveau when Andrew (Friedman) and I were talking about it then. Now everyone is doing it. The edge is going away. From my perspective, for me, it helps. Just adding another layer to it helps. You would be a fool not to try. So I think it has definitely helped me.

Maddon wouldntreveal the exact number theanalytics department projected for a Schwarber-led lineup at the top, but he did confirm it was more than five runs per game. He also acknowledged this: The statistical gurus project the cubs to score more runs with Schwarber leading off than they scored with Dexter Fowler atop the order in 2016, when they scored 808 runs en route to a championship.

The Rockies led the National League with 5.22 runs per game last season, while the Cubs averaged 4.99. The Red Sox led the majors with 878 runs, an average of 5.42 per game.

The Cubs franchise record for runs in a season is 998, recorded in 1930. That figure was inflated by a lively ball that MLB decided to use in order to attract more fans during the Great Depression.

For now, Maddon wants to put his group in the best position to be successful and challenge his dynamic young hitters.

They gave me a sheet with different scenarios, Maddon said. It was pretty heavy. It was good. Dexter was awesome, but with Schwarbers power potential, the home runs coming out of that spot with extra at-bats (could help). You also have the natural rebounding of Jason (Heyward). He will be a better hitter. We talk about bearing down on defense and pitching because these (offensive numbers) are going to get better. They have more experience. All of these things set up the right way, we should have a better offensive year, especially against right-handed pitchers.
