Gonzaga moving on, together, with elusive Final Four in sight

HOUSTON For a while Friday night, Gonzagas strategy seemed to be: Lets miss shots by a smaller margin than UCLA. Gonzaga struggled to put the ball in the basket. UCLA struggled to put the ball near the basket. For long stretches, it was the kind of ugly game that makes people question why basketball has to be played in a dome. Or at all, really.

And you know what? It didnt matter. The Bulldogs were never going to lose this game. Never. Not from the opening tip, not when the teams combined to miss 19 straight shots and not when the Bruins went on a predictable run to start the second half, cutting Gonzaga's seven-point halftime lead to 35-34.

The Bulldogs were the tougher, smarter, more skilled team, and they knew it all along. The difference in Gonzagas 74-62 win in the Sweet 16 of the South Regional could be summed up in two players. UCLA has a freshman named Kevon Looney who could be an NBA lottery pick this summer. He finished with nine points and eight rebounds, but there were members of the Gonzaga band who had a bigger impact on the game.

Meanwhile, Bulldogs center Przemek Karnowski had 18 points, nine rebounds and roughly 11 yells with his fists outhe was one rebound away from a Caveman Triple Double. He was fantastic. Somebody should reward him with a jersey that isnt so tight,

And when it was over, Gonzaga coach Mark Few poured some verbal high fructose corn syrup on his press conference. He talked about all the lovey-dovey college stuff that makes people roll their eyes. But if you watched the game, you could see it. You could see what Few meant when he said this:

"The biggest thing with this win is, it allows this group to play together, which is the highest motivating factor theyve got going on. Were 40 minutes away from another week together. The way they feel about each other, care about each other and love each other, that is the motivating factor."

Thats nice, Coach, but those of us in the media will choose your motivating factors, OK? You just coach the team.

We have decided that your team's motivating factor is to bring Gonzaga to its first Final Four, thus legitimizing the incredible success the program has enjoyed for the last 17 years unless you then lose in the Final Four, at which point we will decide you need to win a national championship. Got it? Thats your narrative. Dont stray from it unless we give you permission.

Kidding aside, even Few would acknowledge that making the Final Four would mean so much for Gonzaganot just for the current players, but for all the former ones. And you know, its unlikely that the Bulldogs will beat Duke on Sunday, because the Blue Devils are the second-most talented team in the country and are playing extremely well. But its not impossible.

Duke has the nation's best post player in 6'11" freshmanJahlil Okaforbut does not have much depth behind him. And while Okafors defensive deficiencies have been overblown, he is always at risk of getting into foul trouble. With the 7'1"Karnowski and 6'10"Domantas Sabonis, Gonzaga can make Okafor work on defense, and may be able to send him to the bench.

Thats where I think our teams deadly, said Zags star Kyle Wiltjer, who was speaking generally, not about Duke specifically. We have that depth and we can put really big foul pressure on other teams bigs. Sometimes we get easy baskets because they are scared theyre gonna foul.

Few called upon that strength during the only moment when there was any real tension in Friday's game, after the Bruins had gotten within one point two minutes into the second half. He called timeout, tweaked the Bulldogs' defense against pick-and-rolls and reminded his team to play inside-out.

We called a bunch of sets that pretty much demand the ball goes in there, Few said.

Gonzaga respondednot just by playing well, but by playing well in exactly the way Few wanted. As Wiltjer, the junior forward who finished with eight points and 10 rebounds, said: We really just stayed true to our values Were very confident. We believe that we belong here. Were playing with a chip on our shoulder.

Few said afterward: We didnt play perfect tonight. Probably didnt even play what we would consider really good. But we were tough and we were physical.

The Bulldogs werent very good, but they were good enough. Thats the sign of an outstanding team. They will have to be great to beat Duke. But know this: They will be ready. After all these years, give them that.

WWE WrestleMania 31: Undertaker begins a new streak after tombstoning Bray ...

WWE fans were stunned at last year's WrestleMania, when The Undertaker's seemingly inexorable Streak was brought to an end by Brock Lesnar.

There was suggestion that Taker was on his way out, looking weaker than usual during the match, but he put any rumours of an imminent retirement to bed at WrestleMania 31 last night, looming large once more and crushing Bray Wyatt.

The clash was angled around Bray suggesting that he was the new face of fear in the WWE, an idea that was challenged towards the end of the bout in a cool moment where Bray crab walked across the ring towards Taker, only for him to do one of his trademark coffin-esque sit-ups.

Wyatt did get a fair few shots in and almost had Undertaker in a Sister Abigail, but the Phenom countered with a Tombstone Piledriver for the victory.

The WWE was keen to show that the Undertaker can still be a force in the promotion, tweeting that his "fire still burns" as Jim Ross claimed "Taker looks great" and has "fuel left in the tank".

It remains to be seen how much longer the 50-year-old can wrestle for, with the most popular rumour seeing him go out in a momentous match with fellow veteran Sting at WrestleMania 32.

Cricket a gentleman's game? No ways, not in South Africa

If it is true that quotas played a part in the selection of South Africa's team to play in their losing semi-final against New Zealand at the Cricket World Cup, Cricket SA board members should bow their heads in shame.

They should also look at themselves in a mirror and ask themselves this question: Are you stupid?

Does transformation come before even a prize such as the World Cup title? Is a World Cup semi-final the place and time to regurgitate the bitterness of the past by going back to a system that should have been scrapped 10 years into the new democracy?

It is simply disgusting to think Chris Nenzani, Norman Arendse and their fellow board members might have perpetrated something like this.

The great Nelson Mandela endorsed the 1995 Springbok rugby team even though only one player of colour was in the World Cup winning lineup -- Chester Williams.

He also called for the springbok emblem to be retained. He knew how sporting success could build a nation.

Now that he has gone, these mealy mouthed little men continue to insult his legacy by allegedly doing repulsive things like this.

Were any of them there when the Springboks won the Rugby World Cup in 1995? Did any of them see the celebrations, the explosion of joy, in the streets around Ellis Park?

The win was celebrated by white, coloured, Indian and black alike, all of them overjoyed that their new democracy had achieved something so great.

I suspect they weren't there. I suspect that some of them even resented that win, because it set back their bitter campaigns.

All the cricketers are under contract. Their livelihood is cricket. Most of them have little else to turn to if they are banned from cricket.

So they can hardly be blamed for the conspiracy of silence following the revelations about the cricket semi-final in Auckland.

AB won't talk, coach Russell Domingo won't talk, it's unlikely Vernon Philander will talk, given that he is the centre of this storm of outrage. Will Kyle Abbott, the man who should have played in Philander's place talk?

It's doubtful. That team is tight. The players support and respect each other. Not one of them would want to do anything to undermine a team-mate.

So, who, apart from the secret sources named in the original story by our cricket writer, Telford Vice, will talk?

The only man who could possibly shed light on this is the convener of the cricket selection committee, Andrew Hudson, one of the most decent gentlemanly players who ever represented South Africa-- in fact, so decent, that getting involved in this kind of thing must leave him appalled -- and probably way out of his depth.

The Hudson we have known isn't this devious, he isn't this deceitful. He would want to play with a straight bat and, if he was ordered to play the unfit, out-of-form Philander, who went for 17 runs in his first over, it must have broken his heart.

Or has being part of cricket's highly politicised hierarchy contaminated him; has he been convinced that the wrong way is the right way?

The next few weeks are likely to be revealing. If he resigns, we will know that he has been unable to reconcile his conscience with the things he might have been forced to do.

If he doesn't, he is the one who will have to tell us: was Philander, who had a dreadful World Cup, a political plant or not.

If there was political intervention, then Cricket SA's radicals - politicians who shouldn't be in sport - will have to take responsibility for sabotaging the process of nation-building that such a big sporting triumph would further -- and, the very thing this country needs more than anything else.

As an afterthought, if a wildly over-extravagant, over-publicised and over dramatised inquiry had to be held into Hansie Cronje's match-fixing antics, then there should be an equally well publicised, judicial inquiry into these charges of political intervention because if there was, it would be every bit as dishonest as Cronje's actions were. Perhaps even more so.

Cricket a gentleman's game? No way; not in South Africa.

Gonzaga vs. Duke 2015 results: 3 things we learned from Blue Devils' shutdown ...

Duke held Gonzaga without a field goal in the final 6:40 of play on Sunday in Houston.

Duke was looking for its 12th Final Four berth. Gonzaga was looking for its first.

On Sunday in Houston, history repeated itself at NRG Stadium in the South Regional final. No. 1 Duke locked down the Bulldogs on defense and made free throws and clutch shots down the stretch to earn a 66-52 win over No. 2 Gonzaga, along with the last Final Four berth awarded in the 2015 NCAA Tournament.

Talented freshmen carried the day for Duke: Matt Jones (16 points, 4-for-7 from three) fired away from deep, Justise Winslow (16 points) mixed threes and free throws, and Tyus Jones contributed 15 points and six assists. That production made up from another relatively quiet game from Jahlil Okafor, who finished with just nine points and seven rebounds.

But it was defense that made the difference down the stretch for the Blue Devils, who held Gonzaga without a field goal for the final 6:40 of play, building a double-digit lead in the process. Bulldogs big men Przemek Karnowski and Domantas Sabonis combined for just 13 points, and while Kentucky transfer Kyle Wiltjer's 16 points led Gonzaga, only one other Zag, Byron Wesley, scored in double figures.

The victory gives Duke and Mike Krzyzewski 12 Final Four appearances, tying Coach K with John Wooden for the most Final Four appearances by a coach in college basketball history.

Here are three things we learned from Duke's latest Elite Eight win under Krzyzewski.

1. Duke can be great without much from Okafor

In 40 minutes against Gonzaga, Duke committed just three turnovers one in the first half (with 1:44 left on the clock), and two in the second, one of them deliberate. Gonzaga had 11.

That care taken with the ball helped make up for a relatively mortal day by Okafor, who struggled to find a rhythm against Gonzaga's bigs, and underwhelming shooting inside the arc, where the Blue Devils made only slightly more than a third of their shots. Duke took 56 shots to Gonzaga's 50, and 19 free throws to the Zags' nine; keeping the ball for long enough to take shots and get fouled was the main difference there.

2. Duke is immune to shooting struggles in Houston

The NCAA Tournament has made three trips to the Houston Texans' stadium for regional and Final Four play since 2010. The cavernous venue, and the use of huge black curtains to cover seats not sold for those games, have wreaked havoc on shooting percentages most notably in the 2011 NCAA Tournament final, a game in which UConn shot 34.5 percent from the field, nearly doubling Butler's wretched 18.8 percent shooting on the night.

But Duke? Duke has been just fine in Houston.

In four NCAA Tournament games in what was Reliant Stadium in 2010 and is NRG Stadium now, Duke has made 28-of-66 threes, and shot better than 40 percent from distance in three of four tries, including an 8-for-19 performance on Sunday. 10 other teams have had a combined 14 chances to shoot in Houston, and just one of those three-point performances, Baylor's 8-for-17 night against Saint Mary's in 2010, topped the 40 percent mark.

That magic the Blue Devils have at this venue has helped make them a perfect 4-0 in games in Houston since 2010, propelling them to two Final Fours.

3. Gonzaga just didn't have enough

Gonzaga had a chance to tie the game with just under five minutes to play on a Wiltjer layup, but he missed. From that point on, Duke would outscore the Zags 13-1.

And it wasn't shooting that got the Blue Devils those points: Duke made just two field goals in the final 6:40, while Gonzaga made none. But Duke, and especially Winslow, was able to drive on Gonzaga to create scoring opportunities at the line, while Gonzaga simply couldn't do the same with a team lacking in players capable of breaking down a defense off the dribble.

Former neighbor describes Aaron Hernandez as 'unpleasant and unfriendly'

FALL RIVER Shortly after the two men moved into the two-bedroom apartment next door, Carol Martin Bailey detected a pungent smell in the hallway. She wasnt surprised the Franklin apartment complex where she lives is near woods and had attracted wild animals before.

Oh, the skunks must be back, Bailey recalled thinking to herself. But when she consulted with some of her younger neighbors, they rolled their eyes.

Thats weed, they told the retired biology professor.

Bailey was called to the stand Thursday in the Bristol Superior Court murder case against former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez, who moved into the Franklin apartment complex in May 2013. There, he and his longtime friend, Ernest George Wallace, were often seen.

Bailey, who has lived in the brick housing complex since the 1970s, was their next-door neighbor until June 2013, when Hernandez and Wallace were arrested in the murder of Odin Lloyd, a 27-year-old semiprofessional football player, whose bullet-riddled body was found in an industrial yard in North Attleborough. Wallace and Carlos Ortiz, another Hernandez associate, will be tried separately for the June 17, 2013, killing. They have pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder.

Live video of the murder trial

The trial of Hernandez has introduced jurors to stone-faced detectives, fingerprint analysts, and cellphone experts. On Thursday, jurors heard from a state trooper who said the rear tire of the Nissan Altima Hernandez drove that night matched a track left at the crime scene, and from a T-mobile representative who testified about the location of Lloyds cellphone.

Steven Senne/Pool

Massachusetts State Police Trooper Todd Girouard held a piece of film with an imprint of a tire track during Aaron Hernandezs trial Thursday.

Baileys testimony, which prosecutors used to show the relationship between Hernandez and Wallace, was an example of how far-reaching the case has become. She is one of about 300 people the prosecution has put on its witness list. Her testimony also gave a glimpse into Hernandezs days in the Franklin apartment, which he rented for $1,200 a month even though he shared a home in nearby North Attleborough with his longtime girlfriend. Prosecutors have said he wanted that apartment to conduct illegal activities like storing guns. The defense has tried to cast Hernandez as a young, fun-loving man with money to spare who partied at the apartment with friends and women.

On the stand, Bailey was restrained by Judge E. Susan Garsh on how much she could say. For example, she could not speculate about the source of the skunky smell.

In a telephone interview after her testimony, Bailey recalled meeting Wallace while she was reading in the courtyard of the complex.

He introduced himself as her new neighbor, George, she said, shook her hand, and told her he was moving in with his cousin, who was with the Patriots. The next day, she saw a tall, well-built man heading to the third-floor apartment. Despite the warm weather, he wore sweatpants and a hooded sweatshirt pulled tight around his face.

Steven Senne/Pool

Judge E. Susan Garsh prevented a witness from speculating about the source of a skunky smell coming from Aaron Hernandezs Franklin apartment.

I said, Hello, you must be my new neighbor. ... You must be Georges cousin, Bailey recalled. He just looked at me and grunted and went in. That was the most ever I got out of him a grunt.

Wallace, however, was solicitous and warm, she said. He often came over to ask for things such as an electrical cord or directions to places in town. When he saw her lugging groceries, he would rush to help. One day, Wallace asked if it would be OK if he placed an air freshener and scented sticks in the common hallway.

It did not help mask the smell of what her neighbors later said was marijuana, but Bailey did not complain.

Im a neighbor who tries to live and let live, she said.

Occasionally, when she passed by their door, Bailey would hear loud male voices yelling expletives and making crude remarks. They said nothing alarming, she said, just the kind of male talk she heard when she was in college and went by the mens locker room.

Residents in the complex, which is made up mostly of retired professionals like Bailey or young couples with children saving for their first house, recognized Hernandez but left him alone.

Around late June, Bailey stopped smelling the skunk-like odor, she said. Then, she saw on television that both her neighbors had been arrested.

I was particularly shocked about George because he had been so cordial, so friendly, so neighborly, she said. Aaron Hernandez had always been sort of unpleasant and unfriendly. That probably was just because he didnt want it to be known who he was. He didnt want a fan club.

Fans get drenched on a rainy Day 1 of Ultra Music Festival

Among a throng of people standing in line Friday afternoon under the hot Miami sun, Kenya Solomon wore a string of pink flowers on her head, a black tank top and tie-dyed shorts as she spoke of her love of electronic dance music.

It just lets you be free and be yourself, she said. You feel it run through your whole body. You release all your stress.

The 19-year-old college student from North Carolina came to Bayfront Park for the Ultra Music Festival, which opened its gates Friday afternoon for the 17th edition of the three-day, internationally known event.

Scores of revelers wearing bright get-ups, from bathing suits to elaborate, feathered, frilly, flourescent outfits flooded the park. The steady beat of the music boomed along Biscayne Boulevard as fans jumped and gyrated. Outside the maze of barricades and gates set up to guide festival goers to the entrances, police directed traffic. Downtown streets were clogged following the festivals 4 p.m. start.

The afternoon heat gave way to a stormy evening as wind and rain sent crowds of revelers scrambling for cover under trees, covered walkways, stages and tents. Still, hundreds threw their hands up and jumped to the pulse of the music in the face of the downpour.

By about 9 p.m., however, the rain grew so intense that organizers closed five of seven stages.

Chuck Caracozza, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said the rain is a result of a strong cold front hitting South Florida this weekend. Caracozza said the weather should be much drier with temperatures in the mid-70s during the day and in the 50s overnight on Saturday.

Its going to be a big change from what weve been experiencing in the past few weeks, Caracozza said.

Earlier Friday, with the weather not an issue, Marlon Chacon, 18, draped a Costa Rican flag over his back with the festivals logo on it as he and two friends, who traveled from the Central American nation, walked up Biscayne Boulevard.

Its our first time, he said. I want to see a bunch of DJs, Tiesto and Porter Robinson.

Early birds in line chanted, sang and took selfies as they stood in line.

Organizers hope for an incident-free weekend, not a repeat of last year when security guard Erica Mack was trampled underneath a chain link-fence that toppled over after people crashed the gate to get into the opening day of the festival. Mack was hospitalized for 11 days.

Changes have been made to security and safety for the 165,000-ticket festival. The increased police presence could be seen all around the entrance Friday, and sturdier fencing encased Bayfront Park.

Rene Pimentel, spokesman for the Miami Police Department, said several undercover narcotics officers are roaming the grounds of the festival, which has a reputation for drug use.

Pimentel said several arrests had been made early Friday night, but exact numbers were not available.

We want to keep people safe, and we want to send a message to those coming to the festival looking to buy drugs, he said. You might be buying from an officer, and your partys getting cut short.

Several fans came from afar for the weekend. Kristy Darbishire, 25, donned a white bikini with red maple leaves to show her Toronto pride. With red and white streamers flowing from her crimson hair, she said she was most excited about hearing Skrillex and David Guetta.

This weekend is her first time at Ultra, and she rattled off the reasons why she loves electronic music festivals:

The costumes, the environment, the people, the love, no hatred, no judgment.

Kim Kowalski, 23, lives across the street from the park in downtown. Where shes heard and felt Ultra from her apartment in the past, she crossed the street Friday for her first experience inside the gates.

Even NFL star Rob Gronkowski came out for the festivities. A fan captured the New England Patriots tight end twerking on stage.

Deadpool's Movie Costume: An In-Depth Look

Yes, Deadpool is really coming to the big screen courtesy of Fox on Feb 12, 2016, and he wont be sewed-mouthed with Baraka-arms and borrowed powers. No, h**l be the Merc with the Mouth, and as RyanReynolds revealed today, his costume as Wade Wilson is a very close likeness to his most popular comic look.

Here well take a look at the individual components of the costume, and compare them to how he has been seen in the pages of Marvel Comics stories. They say a pictures worth

The Red and Black

The basic design, including the black and red color scheme, hearkens back to creator Rob Liefelds original look for the character. Created for The New Mutants #98, drawn and plotted by Liefeld and scripted by Fabian Nicieza, the eventual merc with the mouth was then mostly just a lethal mercenary.

The red bodysuit Liefeld designed had black accents on the shoulders, alongside the outer edges of the ribcage and up onto his chest, and large black ovals around eye slits. The costume we see for the film seems to follow those basic design elements perfectly, if with slightly smaller eye-ovals than originally designed.

The Straps and Buckles

The buckles we see across the chest in the movie shot were not part of the original design, though they were included in the design for 2013s Deadpool video game with a practical use they held his swords to his back.

He also has a strap going across his chest, which looks like its more likely for that particular use, holding a sword for quick access. He also has straps around each bicep, each wrist, and several around his legs. Arm and wrist guards are fairly common amongst various sports, as protective gear in hand-to-hand and weapon combat, and lets be honest, Deadpool probably just thinks they look cool. The ones around his calf also hold a sheathe of a sort for a knife in the comics, the characters only real superpower is his ridiculous level of healing (and pain threshold), so his proficiency in virtually every type of weapon comes in handy. Going with the protective gear theory, it does look like he has kneepads built into the legs of the costume, as well.

Pouches, Glorious Pouches!

A stereotypical staple of 90s costume design, the copious pouches come right from Liefelds original look for the character, as well. Theres a belt full of pouches, two leg-belts lined with pouches, and even smaller capsule-size pouches around his arm, in Deadpools first comic book appearance.

In this first film shot, we see the belt, and it looks lined with pouches. The right leg also has pouches wrapped around it, while another sheathe or holster takes that spot on the left leg.

In real life, for instance in the US Army (which I was enlisted in for 6 years), pouches are an essential part of the uniform. Classic Web Gear would hold about six-eight pouches, used to hold ammunition, canteens, maps, compasses, cammo tubes, and just about any other miscellany you can think of that you might need handy, including the occasional snack. Newer web gear has room for as many as 12 different pouches of varying sizes. Most modern body armor also has tags on it to which additional pouches can be hooked. This is all in addition to the many pockets built right into the uniform. So really, the number of pouches on this outfit (and any others created in the 90s) are too few!

And one more thing, the pose!

The pose is glorious, and it captures the humorous nature of the character nicely. More importantly, however, it is a pretty clear homage to Burt Reynolds lying on a Bear Skin rug because WHY WOULDNT IT BE?

New homeowner selling house because he can't get Comcast Internet

One unluckyman who bought a house that can't get wired Internet service is reportedly selling the home just months after moving in.

Seth, a software engineer who works at home, bought a house in Kitsap County, Washington, after being told by multiple Comcast employees that he could buy the Internet service he needs to do his job, according to a detailed Consumerist articleyesterday. Seth also wrote a lengthy account on his blogtitled, "Its Comcastic, or: I Accidentally Bought a House Without Cable." (The man's last name was not given.)

"Before we even made an offer [on the house], I placed two separate phone calls; one to Comcast Business, and one to Xfinity," Seth wrote. "Both sales agents told me that service was available at the address. The Comcast Business agent even told me that a previous resident had already had service. So I believed them."

That turned outto be untrue. After multiple visits from Comcast technicians, he says the company told him extending its network to his house would cost $60,000, of which he would have to pay an unspecified amount. But then Comcast allegedly pulled the offer.

"After about seven weeks of pointless install appointments, deleted orders, dead ends, and vague sky-high estimates, Comcast told him that it had decided to simply not do the extension," according to the Consumerist story. "The company wouldnt even listen to Seths offers to pay for a good chunk of the cost."

We contacted Comcast to get more details last night but haven't heard back.

After getting nowhere with Comcast, Seth tried getting DSL Internet from CenturyLink, which told himit could provide service of up to 10Mbps.

"After that very first Comcast tech told Seth there was no cable infrastructure to his house, he contacted CenturyLink. The company promised to get him hooked up right away," Consumerist wrote. "But then the next day he got a call informing him that his area was in 'Permanent Exhaust' and that CenturyLink wouldnt be adding new customers. Of course, that didnt stop CenturyLink from billing Seth more than $100 for service he never received and will never be able to receive. Seth then had to convince someone with CenturyLinks billing department to zero out the account that should have never been opened."

Besides Comcast and CenturyLink, theKitsap Public Utility District operates a gigabit fiber network that passes near Seth's house, Consumerist wrote. "So why cant he just get his service from the county?Because Washington is one of the half-dozen states that forbids municipal broadband providers from selling service directly to consumers," the article said.

Nationwide, about 20 states impose limits on municipal broadband in order to protect private Internet providers from competition. The Federal Communications Commission voted to preempt such lawsin Tennessee and North Carolina after receiving petitions from municipal providers in those states but is facing a lawsuit over the decision.

Consumerist reporter Chris Morran contacted both Comcast and CenturyLink but was unable to get a satisfactory answer about Seth's case, he wrote.

"Even though Comcast was given weeks to research and comment on Seths story, the company has yet to provide Consumerist with a statement or explanation of how it could not only fail to keep an accurate accounting of serviceable addresses, but why it continued to send tech after tech to do installs that couldnt be done," Morran's article states.

CenturyLink provided Consumerist a short statement: "We researched the issue and found that there was an error in our system, which we are updating.

"That was two days ago, and yet as of right now the CenturyLink website still says Seths address can get broadband service," Morran wrote.

To get his work done, Seth wrote that he is using a Verizon Wireless mobile hotspot that is "frightfully expensive and has a 30GB per month cap...When I want to download a big file, like an OS update or a VM image for work, I go to the local Starbucks. Their Wi-Fi is great."

Seth could get satellite service, but his work requires a VPN connection, which would be unreliable with satellite's high latency.

While Comcast, the country's biggest cable company, tells the federal government it faces so much competitionthat it should be allowed to merge with the second biggest cable operator, agovernment database designed to tell consumers what options they have for Internet service is offering inaccurate information.

The National Broadband Maplets you enter any address in the US to find out what Internet accessoptions are available. The database shows 10 options at Seth's house, including mobile and satellite, but they're all eitherinadequate for home Internet service or unavailable. One of the 10 options is that fiber network that residents cannot use.

"Im devastated. This means we have to sell the house," Seth wrote. "The house that I bought in December, and have lived in for only two months."

Movie Reviews: While We're Young Might Be Baumbach's Best Yet, Get Hard Is ...

A24Noah Baumbach's While We're Young might have been a simple takedown of the millennial generation, those feckless hipsters with their empty values and sense of boundless entitlement. You know: "These d**n kids today."

RELATED ARTICLES MORE ARTICLES BYKurt Loder

But the movie is more complex than that. It focuses on Josh and Cornelia, two married New Yorkers who are surprised to find themselves in their mid-forties with the big dreams of their youth unfulfilled. Josh (Ben Stiller) is a documentary filmmaker. His first film, now obscure, was well-received, but he's spent the last 10 years grubbing for grant money to finish a followup. Cornelia (Naomi Watts), the daughter of an esteemed documentarian, Leslie Breitbart (Charles Grodin), once worked as a producer for her dad but now mainly provides loving support for her husband. She and Josh are childless, and they're okay with that; but their friends, all fellow 40-somethings, are awash in babies. Life is dull, dull, dull.

Then, while teaching a dinky continuing-education course in filmmaking, Josh is approached by another couple, Jamie (Adam Driver) and Darby (Amanda Seyfried). These two are in their mid-twenties, and they're full of fun and spontaneity. Their funky loft in Bushwick (where else?) is packed with retro-hip accoutrements: an old electric typewriter, a collection of VHS tapes, a wall full of vinyl records. Jamie seems to idolize Joshhe has actually seen his first film (he sought it out on eBay), and he wants to learn at the feet of this older director. Josh, starved for approval and admiration, falls right into the younger couple's vibrant lifestyle, bringing Cornelia along with him. Soon Darby is taking Cornelia to hip-hop dance classes, and Jamie is encouraging Josh to buy a stingy-brim fedora. Life is exciting again.

While we're sneering at Jamie and Darby's nitwit trendiness, the movie grows darker. Jamie isn't quite what he seems to behe represents something new in the world, or at least the world as Josh has always known it. Josh is ponderously committed to "truth" and "objectivity" and the art of film. (He says things like "I'm trying to solve the problem that Eisenstein never solved.") But for Jamie, these concepts are quaint leftovers from an earlier, now-irrelevant era: truth is whatever you say it is, and objectivity is a lie.

In another sort of movie, we might expect Josh's traditional values to prevail in the end. But it's not that simple. With youthful vigor, Jamie is quickly assembling a film of his owna film that Josh sees as a corruption of the documentary form. But everyone likes it, even Josh's revered father-in-law. And when Leslie finally sits through Josh's filmall six and a half hours of ithe pronounces the long-gestating project to be "seven hours too long." Josh is hurt and astonished. He determines to expose Jamie as the immoral careerist he actually isa mission in which, again surprisingly, he both succeeds and fails.

This may be Baumbach's best movie. The script he has written has both depth of character and a vivid cultural specificity. And the lead actors do some of their best work. Stiller, who also played it straight in the director's 2010 Greenberg, once again mutes his penchant for compressed comical rage to portray a man whose most dearly held beliefs are being shredded before his eyes. And Watts is both moving and very funny (especially when trying to get down with the hip-hop kids) as a woman disoriented by her own mid-life confusion. Driver deploys his familiar hipster charisma to complex effect, and Seyfried is a minor revelation as a younger woman who's ambiguously uncommitted to much of anything at all.

Baumbach, now 40-something himself, presents these characters as flawed but still worthy in their own ways. He doesn't cut them any breaks, but he doesn't judge them too harshly either. The story concludes with a sigh of bittersweet generosity, which is also not what might normally be expected. It's very grown-up.

Warner BrosGet Hard

Let's see. The story is a blast of scattershot raunch? The star bares his pasty b**t? Is it a Will Ferrell movie?

Yes it is. Get Hard uses its simpleton storylinewhich could fit snugly on a pair of Post-it notesas an armature on which to hang a series of raucous skits, few of them surprising but some of them very funny, in a scattershot way. Possibly in an effort to expand his audience in an "urban" direction, Ferrell has brought on Kevin Hart to costara wise decision. Hart's quick-witted comic presence is a welcome complement to Ferrell's familiar big-baby act. Still, this is a textbook example of a movie you're likely to forget before you make your way out of the theatre.

Ferrell is a stock trader named James, a rich idiot engaged to his boss' hot-but-conniving daughter (Alison Brie). James is baffled when he's unjustly arrested for fraud and embezzlementhe's innocent. But a judge decides to make an example of him and sentences him to 10 years in prison. And not some cushy Club Fed lockup, eitherJames will be going to San Quentin. Terrified by the prospect of a decade of jailhouse rape, James starts looking around for someone to coach him in ways to survive on the inside. He settles on Darnell (Hart), the owner of a car-wash service who's in need of a large cash infusion to build a better life for his wife and daughter. James has cash to infuse, and he figures Darnell is the right guy for his purposes because Darnell is black, and therefore must have spent time in prison himself. Ha ha.

The skits kick in. Darnell turns James's luxurious estate into a simulated prison. He tries to instruct James in how to make a "mad dog face" to scare away menacing cons. (James can only manage "sad-d*****g.") He attempts to teach James how to fight the sort of multiple assailants he might face behind bars, but this doesn't go well either. James does succeed in one area, thoughhe learns how to conceal a shiv in his nether regions.

A number of early reviewers of this movie have decried its "homophobic" approach to the subject of jailhouse rape. I think they should lighten upthis is a venerable comic area. There is a scene in which James attempts to perform f******o on a guy in a restroom stall that crawls right up to the cusp of the film's R rating. But then one of the most appealing characters in the picture is a flirtatious patron at a gay brunch spot. (He's played by Lyle R. Guidroz, an actor who has so far made a career of appearing uncredited in a number of movies. Guidroz has a sunny comic facility that deserves fuller recognition.)

The movie also makes room for rapper T.I. (Clifford Harris to his mom), a natural actor who owns every scene he's in. John Mayer puts in a nicely self-deprecating appearance, too, although it feels like a favor on somebody's part.

The script, by director Etan Cohen and Key & Peele veterans Jay Martel and Ian Roberts, gives Ferrell and Hart some crisp lines. ("When you were at Harvard, you ever get raped?" Darrell asks. James replies: "I think that was more of a Yale thing.") But most of the humor here is standard-issue "edgy." (Darrell teaches James how to pronounce "n****r," there's a fleeting reference to "Jew hair," and we see an occasional bare breast and flaccid p***s.)

There's always been an audience for this sort of retro-potty-mouth movie, and no doubt there still is. How large it is at this point remains to be seen.

Olivia Munn and Aaron Rodgers gleefully celebrated Wisconsin's Sweet 16 win

Actress Olivia Munn and NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers were in the crowd in Los Angeles on Thursday night, rooting on the Wisconsin Badgers to the Elite Eight and, they hope, a second-straight berth in the Final Four.

It was a great game a classic weeknight Sweet 16 battle but once it became clear Wisconsin would prevail over North Carolina, Modgers, no, Munndgers, no, Oliviaaron, no, Aarlivia thats it, thats the celebrity couple nickname were cheering like they were lifelong Wisconsin fans who bleed red, white and some sort of cheese.

Rodgers has been a big Wisconsin basketball backer for years. He followed the team to the Final Four last year and recently joked that he wants a 1-on-1 game against Badgers star Sam Dekker. That sounds like a great idea for a guy playing on a $110 million contract, but I enjoy the desire and moxie nonetheless.

And, sorry Olivia and a mandate of American men, but Ms. Munn is only the second most interesting thing about that picture above. I love LOVE that the sports/Hollywood power couple is sitting directly next to ESPN golf analyst and Wisconsin super-fan, Madison native Andy North. I wonder if Andy ever whispers two U.S. Opens is better than one Super Bowl. I totally would.

Rodgers is a big Badgers fan due to his employment in the State and Munn is a big Badgers fan presumably because shes dating a guy employed in the state. But North is a true diehard and you always have to respect the diehard, except the fifth one A Good Day to Die Hard was just horrible.

Sports news worth sharing!

Germanwings crash: Mother, daughter among 3 American victims

Story highlights
  • Third American killed on Germanwings flight identified as Robert Calvo
  • State Department says three Americans were on the plane
  • Co-workers, friends in shock at deaths of mother and daughter from Virginia

Yvonne Selke and her daughter, Emily, were aboard Germanwings Flight 9525 that crashed Tuesday in the French Alps. They, along with the other 148 people on board that flight, are presumed dead.

"I just keep saying over and over, it's surreal. You always see these things on the news and you think it's horrible, but you never know anyone involved," said Haley Holmes, a close friend of Emily Selke's.

"I think what people need to know about them, and what people should know about them, is that they were two -- not two Americans on a plane, not a mother and daughter on a plane -- but Yvonne and Emily -- two amazing, loving people who left behind friends and family who love and miss them a lot," Holmes told CNN's "Anderson Cooper 360."

Emily Selke had belonged to Gamma Sigma Sigma's Zeta chapter at Drexel University. She was a membership vice president while at the sorority and "an integral part of our growing chapter," according to the chapter's Facebook page.

"She embodied the spirit of Gamma Sigma Sigma," the sorority said. "As a person and friend, Emily always put others before herself and cared deeply for all those in her life. Emily will be greatly missed by her fellow sisters of Zeta."

A music industry major, Emily Selke graduated with honors from the Philadelphia university, according to the school. She then went on to work around Washington for Carr Workplaces, a company that offers office space, meeting rooms and virtual offices, company spokesman Robert Beach said.

"We cherished Emily's work ethic, enthusiasm, humor and overall presence," said Beach, calling her "dedicated, helpful and always willing to go the extra mile."

"Her genuine, bright smile and quick wit will be missed," he added.

Yvonne Selke worked for Booz Allen Hamilton. Betty Thompson, an executive vice president with that consulting firm, described Yvonne as "a wonderful co-worker and a dedicated employee" in a statement to The Washington Post.

Holmes said Yvonne Selke was "a lovely spirit to be around," fiercely loyal to the people she loved.

"Our entire family is deeply saddened by the losses of Yvonne and Emily Selke. Two wonderful, caring, amazing people who meant so much to so many. At this difficult time we respectfully ask for privacy and your prayers," the Selke family said in a statement.

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Wednesday that three Americans were on the plane.

The third American was Robert Calvo, according to Desigual, the clothing company for which he worked for in Spain.

Cambodian PM: Michelle Obama's visit to promote education was US 'just ...

Hours after the Army charged him with desertion and misbehavior before the enemy, Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl released a two-page statement through his attorney that gives his account of what happened during the five years he was held captive by the Taliban.

Bergdahl said that for the first three months, he was "chained to a bed spread-eagle and blindfolded," and because he spent so much time unable to move, his muscles atrophied. After a year, he was placed in a cage with his feet chained every night. He developed acute pain, he said, which turned into a "freezing numbness that continues to the present, as both feet have neuropathy." He was always isolated, sometimes in total darkness and other times in constant light.

He said he tried to escape at least 12 times, and once was able to hide for nine days. Because he had no food and only drank "putrid" water, his body gave up and he was caught by a large Taliban search party, who went on to beat him and "tried to rip my beard and hair out." His captors played mind games, he stated, telling him one day he would be executed, and the next day he would be going home. For the entire time he was held captive, Bergdahl wrote, he had "absolutely no understanding of anything that was happening behind the door I was held behind."

Ad-Rock Thinks Iggy Azalea Is Awful, But Kanye West's Totally Alright

By Marissa G. Muller

Like everyone else, Ad-Rock has an opinion on Iggy Azalea. But unlike everyone else, the Beastie Boys member is actually in a prime position to address the controversial Australian rapper considering his group faced similar accusations of cultural appropriation when they were active.

When asked his thoughts on Azalea, ina new interview with The Daily Beast, Ad-Rock didnt hold back.

We wore fin Puma suits and do-rags, so of course we did! he said, referring to the similar criticism that the group came under. She sounds like Da Brat. I cant say too much because Ive heard literally one song of hers, and its not for me. I was gonna say its awful, and it is awful. But what do I know? Its sold like 20 billion records, so people like it. I dont care, more than anything.

Related: Beastie Boys Win Sampling Lawsuit Over Pauls Boutique

Harsh, but Ad-Rock was much more empathetic when it came to talking about the Blurred Lines verdict, which ordered Robin Thicke and Pharrell to pay the Gaye estate $7.4 million for plagiarism.

[The jury] werent allowed to hear the song in the case but they saw the charts for it, and if youre basing a legal case on drum patterns and bass notes, its a billion songs! he said. Its a simple 4/4 drum pattern that every rap, rock, everything, uses.

Certainly, he has authority to speak there; the Beastie Boys just won a lawsuit over sampling they did inPauls Boutiquethough sampling is, of course, in a different vein from what was alleged (stealing from the source material) in Blurred Lines.

Oh, and hes not so sure about the state of rap as a whole, but he does like Kanye West.

I haveno ideaabout the state of rap, he said. I dont pay attention. I just listen to old music that I have. Once a year, Ill go do a digging search on things, and then listen to that for the next year or two. I like Kanye West he makes good music.

You can read the rest of his interview here.

Darren Sharper -- Hall of Famers Rally Against Him ... 'He Isn't Getting In'

Hall of Famers Rally Against Him 'He Isn't Getting In'

3/25/2015 1:02 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

EXCLUSIVE

Several NFL Hall of Famers tell TMZ Sports ... they are united AGAINST the possibility of Darren Sharper joining their elite group ... with one star putting it bluntly, "He isn't getting in."

As we previously reported, Sharper is still eligible to make the HOF -- despite the fact he's a convicted rapist -- because voters are instructed to IGNORE the players' off-the-field lives.

But multiple former NFL stars who are currently enshrined in Canton tell us they don't like the fact that Sharper could join them one day. Here are some of the strongest quotes:

John Randle(inducted 2010) -- "My gut says he'll never get in. At the end of the day, it looks bad upon the Hall if someone in prison for rape receives that honor. It taints the group."

Willie Roaf( inducted 2012) -- "If Sharper was inducted, it would shine a bad light on the Hall. He would have to do a complete image makeover. I don't know if that's possible."

Dan Hampton(inducted 2002) -- "Darren Sharper has no business being considered for induction into this exclusive fraternity. The systematic commission of these heinous crimes that [he] has committed should preclude him from any HOF consideration. Simple as that."

Another HOFer who wished to remain anonymous went even stronger -- "He isn't getting in. I don't care what the rules say about only considering what happened on the field."

Darren Sharper -- Eligible For HOF ... Despite Rape Conviction

Eligible For Hall Of Fame... Despite Rape Conviction

3/24/2015 3:01 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

EXCLUSIVE

Despite the fact he'll be locked up for the next 9 years, convicted rapist Darren Sharper is still eligible to be elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame -- and based on his numbers alone, there's a real possibility it could happen.

TMZ Sports spoke with Joe Horrigan -- Executive V.P. of the Selection Process for the Pro Football HOF -- who tells us there's nothing in the bylaws preventing a convicted criminal from being enshrined in Canton.

Horrigan says as long as the player has been out of the league for 5 years and has made at least 1 All-Pro team ... that person is eligible.

That being said ... the Exec. V.P. says it's POSSIBLE voters will take Sharper's crimes into account when voting for the former New Orleans Saints superstar -- but they're not supposed to.

FYI ... Sharper played 14 seasons in the league and was a 6-time All-Pro ... widely considered one of the best safeties of his era.

Sharper last played in 2010 ... so he would be eligible as early as 2016.

Stay tuned ...

Could there be 11 billion reasons for Alabama to vote for Ted Cruz for president?

So there's an old adage in politics that people oftenvote with their wallet. Put another way, they vote for candidates who they believe will help them the most financially.

It's not an all-inclusive perspective, of course, and it's a broad generalization. However, old political adages become old because there is likely some element of truth involved.

Given that preface, is Ted Cruz the best presidential candidate for Alabama?

Here's the thing: On Monday, U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Huntsville, praised Cruz as a strong candidate- although Brooks stopped short of giving an endorsement of the Texas senator.

Brooks also said this: "He's a strong supporter of human space travel. Redstone Arsenal - both on the military side and the space side - could not hope for a better president than Ted Cruz. Because Ted Cruz is strongly in favor of human space flight, which is what the Marshall Space Flight Center's primary focus is.

"And Ted Cruz understands that the world is still a very dangerous place and just as it's good to have carrots, you need to have sticks in order to secure world peace -- which means you've got to have a strong military."

And that's where your wallet comes in.

In 2012, a study valued the economic impact of Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville at $11.47 billion and about 101,000 jobs. That broke down to about 6 percent of the state's Gross Domestic Product.

Of course, that's not a suggestion that any other candidate would wipe Redstone off the map.

But if, as Brooks said, Redstone (and its $11 billion economic impact) "could not hope for a better president than Ted Cruz," would that cause you to vote with your wallet?

College Basketball Fans Tune-In To NCAA Tournament, Overlook The Negatives

The NCAA tournament generated its highest ratings in over 20 years this past weekend spurred by a bundle of close games and upsets. On Thursday and Friday, 10 of the 32 first round games were decided by a bucket or less with two 3-seeds falling to 14-seeds. Over the weekend, a 1-seed (Villanova) and two 2-seeds, including Kansas, dropped to much lower-seeded teams.

Apparently, for a lot of fans, the combination of drama, specific match-ups, and telecast times outweigh the negatives. Here are some not-so-nice elements of the tournament:

1. Scrimmages for Top SeedsThe four 1-seeds clobbered their opponents by an average margin of 26 points. In over 30 years of seeding, no 16-seed has defeated a top-seed and only a couple of games have ever been near-misses. In a tournament about drama and competitiveness, these lop-sided games amount to little more than scrimmages. Besides being boring, its a huge advantage to top seeds to have a one-game bye. One solution would be to expand the slate of Tuesday/Wednesday play-in games from four to sixteen, where all of the 13-16 seeds play against sixteen other teams. The winners of these games could then be randomly assigned to games against the 1-4 seeds. (The random assignment could take place in advance so that teams could scout each other.)

2. Detracting from DramaClose games are entertaining but slow-as-molasses finishes are not. The boatload of timeouts available to coaches and fouling at the end of games takes away from the drama rather than enhancing it. The Wall Street Journals Jason Gay aptly described the state of affairs as resembling watching ones grandparents unpack the groceries.

3. Fouls Galore But Few WhistlesFor fans under 35 who have been weaned on players grabbing, bumping, and shoving, the hyper-physical play doesnt seem to diminish enjoyment very much. Its a bit like Soviet citizens who grew accustomed to bread lines. Thats life. For those who can remember the aesthetics of the game before basketball turned into wrestling, its hard to watch at times.

West Virginias Bob Huggins actually gave expression to this obvious devolution and its cause over the last 30 years. Speaking after their upset of Maryland, he said, if we foul 100 times, there only going to call 20. So, he distributes playing time among a dozen players and instructs his Mountaineers to play with an aggressiveness that Attila-the-Hun could appreciate. These tactics bring praise from most college basketball analysts as inspired coaching. The one inaccuracy in his statement is that it is more like 300 times than 100.

Of course, Maryland could hardly complain. Their win against low-seeded Valparaiso came with a saving grab by the Terps Varun Ram on Valpos Keith Carter shown below that analysts have hailed as great defense.

El Clasico: Top five thrilling Barcelona vs Real Madrid clashes

Once again, the time has arrived for the clash of the titans tonight. The Catalans will be taking on the mighty Galacticos. Defenders from both teams will be sweating over how to keep Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in check.

El Clasico matches have made for some of the most entertaining, jaw-dropping and thrilling moments in football. And before the two giants take the field tonight, we race back through time to take you through a journey of the top 5 games between these two teams.

5: 22nd October, 2006 Real Madrid 2-0 Barcelona

Ruud Van Nistelrooy. Pic/ AFP

When the two teams met in 2006, most believed it would be Ronaldinho running rings around the Madrid defence. But it was Raul who got on the scoreboard first, that too in a span of two minutes. This was followed by Ruud Van Nistelrooys brilliant second goal that revived Real Madrids hopes in the season.

4: 4th March, 2001 Real Madrid 2-2 Barcelona

Raul. Pic/ AFP

This game will be remembered for two names Raul and Rivaldo (besides a little controversial twist). Star striker Raul netted the first goal early on, but Rivaldo quickly equalized. Within barely a minute, Raul replied again with another goal putting Madrid in the lead. But with just 20 minutes of play time remaining Rivaldo replied with another goal that leveled the score. There was an apparent third goal shot by the Brazilian striker, which was disallowed. On this night there clearly were only two stars shining.

3: 10th April, 2005 Real Madrid 4-2 Barcelona

Zinedine Zidane. Pic/ AFP

This game definitely will be remembered as one of the grandest of them all for it had the finest football stars of that particular time. With the likes of Zidane, Ronaldo, Owen and Raul who showcased their talent by netting one each for Madrid, while it was Ronaldinho and Eto who scored for Barcelona. This 2005 clash was one of the most memorable El Clasico games.

2: 19th November, 2005 Real Madrid 0-3 Barcelona

Ronaldinho. Pic/ AFP

The 2005 clash between the Glacticos and the Catalans was the most memorable game in El Clasico history with Brazilian legend and football magician Ronaldinho playing one of the finest games in his entire career. It was a one-man massacre at the Bernabau that night with Brazilian showcasing some of the finest tricks in football. Believe you me; this single-man demolition act received a standing ovation by the crowd. A game and player like this comes along just once.

1: 10th March, 2007 Barcelona 3-3 Real Madrid

Lionel Messi. Pic/ AFP

On this night at Camp Nou, Real Madrid looked to have taken total control of the Catalans with Ruud Van Nistlerooy scoring a brace. But Barca striker Lionel Messi had other plans. He netted two for the team as well but it was the defining third goal that got jaws dropping. After gliding through the Madrid defence Messi shot an epic goal which carved his name into the history books of football!

Ted Cruz, Tea Party Hawk

Freshman Senator Ted Cruz is running for president, hoping to gain the Republican nomination bybringing together conservatives, libertarians and evangelicals. On foreign policy, thats a tough balance to strike. Yet Cruz has crafted his own brand of hawkishness tailored to please even his Tea Party supporters.

In a long interviewat the Halifax International Security Conference late last year, Cruz walked me through his strategy for staking out a positionthat falls somewhere between the isolationism of Senator Rand Paul and the neoconservatism of Senator John McCain. When asked which foreign policy experts he trusts, he named three: John Bolton, ambassador to the United Nations under President George W. Bush; Elliott Abrams, who served in top foreignpolicy posts under Bush and President Ronald Reagan; and former CIA director James Woolsey, a hawkish Democrat. He framed his worldview as one that spares no effort in defending American national security but limits adventurism abroad.

The central touchstone for U.S. foreign policy should be defending the vital national security interests of the United States, he said. He calledweakness onthat obligation "the most central failing" of the foreign policies of President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

In his brief Senate career, Cruz has sometimes sided with libertarians such asPaul on big national security issues, as when he opposed Obamas request for authorization to attack Syria afterBashar al-Assads alleged use of chemical weapons (Obama later withdrew that request). ButCruz has also sided withthe hawksinopposing Obamas nuclear negotiations with Iran and pushing for more sanctionson the Tehran regime.

I believe both of those positions areconsistent because both are driven by national security interests, Cruz told me. There are a range of views within the Republican Party, but there is an overwhelming consensus that the Obama-Clinton foreign policy is a manifest disaster, that leading from behind does not work.

Cruz reconciles his advocacy for American power with his aversion to using military force by trumpeting democracy promotion and human-rights advocacy. In the Senate, he has taken up the causes of individual human rights activists such as Mariem Ibrahim, the Sudanese Christian woman who was sentenced to death for her faith and later released.

It is inexplicable and indefensible that this president will almost never speak out for dissidents, Cruz said. I dont believe that shining light and speaking truth is soft power, it's often far more effective than dropping bombs.

Cruz wants the U.S.to publicly confront the Iranian regime for its treatment of its own citizens, and as president he would lend support to human rights and democracy movements around the world, although not through the use of the U.S. armed forces.

As forthe conflictsin the Middle East, Cruz said he doesnt necessarily want the U.S.to take a side. Like many Republicans (and apparently David Petraeus), he sees Iran asthe major threat to U.S. security.

As serious a threat as ISIS presents, the threat from Iran is qualitatively greater. And the Obama administration has it backwards, they are trying to use ISIS to weaken our stance against Iran, he said. The growing potency of ISIS should be used to put even greater pressure on Iran.

Cruz doesnt think the U.S. should risk livessorting out the conflictbetween Sunni and Shiite Muslims. It is the height of hubris and ignorance to think that after 1,500 years of sectarian civil war that the U.S. can come in and convince Sunnis and Shiites to put down their arms and embrace, he said.

Cruz insistedthat Obamas Syria policy has been an incoherent mess, but he doesnt advocate more support for the Syrian rebels or the use of U.S. power to help remove the regime. He said Assad is a monster, but that if the rebels won and extremists came to power, that could be worse for Americas national security.

In the rare cases where the U.S. must use force, Cruz said, it should be used sparingly and only for a limited mission: We should not engage in long-term nation building.

On defense spending, Cruz tries to bridge the divide between the defense hawks and the budget hawks by decrying the sequestration under the2011 Budget Control Act while also calling for reforms in Pentagon spending and a crackdown on waste, fraud and abuse.

Overall, expect Cruz to focus his foreign policy criticism on what he sees asHillary Clinton's reticence to take tough internationalstands. The Obama administration negotiates a potentially catastrophic Iran deal, where is Hillary Clinton? Utterly silent. If she desires to be commander in chief, now is the time to stand up and speak, he said. I understand theres political risk in her party to saying anything out loud. But in a time of great challenges, leadership matters.

Cruz is not the first Tea Party-friendly candidate to strike a hawkish tone:Sarah Palin tried to walk that line after her failed vice presidency bid in 2008. Cruz can make a case for the policies. The question is whetherhawkish and libertarian Republicans will sign on.

Barcelona vs. Real Madrid: Tactical Review of 2015 El Clasico

Barcelona extended their lead at the top of La Liga to four points on Sunday by winning the first Clasico of 2015 against Real Madrid. Jeremy Mathieu and Luis Suarez struck either side of a Cristiano Ronaldo goal to give la Blaugrana a timely boost at a key stage of the season.

Formations and XIs

Barcelona played a 4-3-3 as expected, with Javier Mascherano starting as an anchor due to Sergio Busquets only being fit enough for the bench. The Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez trio continued up front, and Jeremy Mathieu started in central defence alongside Gerard Pique. Claudio Bravo resumed duties in goal.

Real Madrid played a fluid 4-3-3/4-4-2, with Cristiano Ronaldo straddling a left-wing/striker role, Gareth Bale playing slightly deeper on the right and Isco partnering Toni Kroos in central midfield.

1. Marcelo Epitomises Madrid's Attacking Energy

Marcelo has been a little hesitant to venture forward in La Liga of late, so it was a (pleasant) surprise to see him willing and able to bomb forward in the Clasico. His energy and appetite for attacking epitomised Real Madrid's strong first half.

He would either dance forward as a true wide player or overlap and be found by a pass from central midfield; either way, he was central to all things quick and potent early on. Both of Madrid's most threatening attacks in the first period were down the left side, and rather than sit cautiously and try to care for Messi's presence on his flank, Marcelo opted to take advantage of the fact he wasn't being tracked.

With Ivan Rakitic a little slow to get over and mark him, Dani Alves was frequently exposed in these stages. Karim Benzema's immense movement into the channels then became a real threat, and with the Frenchman joining Marcelo in overloading that side, Barca's defence was forced to shuffle over and fall out of position.

The hosts took the lead through a brilliant Mathieu header, but los Blancos, on balance, were by far the better side across the first 45 minutes.

2. Ronaldo's Equaliser

Ronaldo scored the equaliser, but Real Madrid's goal on the night wasall about the build-up play. It's deserving of great commendation, and adds another string to the bow supporting Benzema as a world-class talent.

With Modric creeping forward with the ball and Benzema spotting Mathieu in a wide position (dragged out to start closing Bale down), the Frenchman darted right to take Pique with him and opened a huge gap in the centre of defence. Ronaldo saw it and filled it, and Benzema's sumptuous flick found him for a first-time finish.

Jaw-dropping stuff from the striker.

His movement into the channels and in dragging defenders around throughout the first half was absolutely stunning, and this was the validation of his play; his piece de resistance.

3. Direct Barcelona

The opening 10 minutes of the second half were a little scrappy, then suddenly Suarez, like a bolt from the blue, made one run, that was picked out by one Alves pass, and gave Barcelona the lead.

It was symptomatic of the "new"(ish) Barcelona we've been treated to this season. They're still a 4-3-3 passing side, but they move the ball from back to front much, much quicker and Suarez latching on to a defender's long ball has been a theme for success.

The Uruguayan took advantage of a ropey-looking defensive line, controlled Alves' brilliant pass with one magnificent, G*d-like touch and slotted home in trademark fashion. It wasn't the first time he's scored "that" goal this season, and it won't be the last.

Luis Enrique has focused on getting the ball out of the centre-backs' feet and into Ivan Rakitic, who can turn and supply the front three within seconds. The Croatian's excellence at this is why Xavi has been marginalised, and he's the embodiment of the tactical nuance that's given la Blaugrana an edge this year.

4. Disconnect

"We didn't play like a team," Modric stated to reporters after the game (h/t Inside Spanish Football). He's absolutely hit the nail on the head.First half for los Blancos? Great. But the second? A shambolic mess.

Once Barcelona had gone 2-1 up, Real Madrid's front three stopped pressing and harassing the opponents, devoting themselves solely to attacking as they were in need of a goal. They stood high up the pitch and waited for the ball to be passed to them, but it never actually came.

Barca began pushing forward and finding themselves free to pick their passes, approaching Madrid's midfield line without any pressure from the forwards. It naturally dragged the away side's midfield contingent forward in order to engage, opening huge holes in between themselves and the defence for Enrique's front three to exploit.

All of a sudden, with Messi drifting centrally and exploiting the space behind Toni Kroos and Modric, one simple pass between the lines was enough to set the hosts away on a barreling attack. Several were carved out, and only poor decision-making and profligacy from all threeand in particular Neymarstopped them from making the score looking more convincing.

Quickfire Conclusions

  • Bale was essentially absent again. Last week he bagged a brace and cupped his hands to his ears, but this was more like the norm for the Welshman who has been very quiet of late.
  • Benzema and Marcelo, in addition to perhaps Modric, were Real Madrid's outfield players, and Iker Casillas showed the world he hasn't declined quite as sharply as some want to suggest.
  • In the first half Madrid were superb, in the second Barca were. Neither could string together a full 90 minutes of good play.
  • As ever, yellow cards provided a predictable backdrop to the game, but some of the play-acting and needless involvements in scuffles (we're looking at you, Jordi Alba) were disappointing to see.
