Alt-right icon Richard Spencer sparks clashes at Auburn; 3 arrested

Richard Spencer"s Full Speech at Auburn University

AUBURN, Ala. Alt-right spokesman Richard Spencer brought his version of white supremacist thought to the Auburn University campus Tuesday, despite efforts by university officials to shut him down.

The speech almost did not happen, but a federal judge in Montgomery overruled the university hours before the scheduled appearance, a delighted spencer told his audience.

We won a victory that is going to have echoes around the world, Spencer said to loud applause, largely from the front of the hall where a group almost exclusively of white men sat.

When the event ended, around 9 p.m. central time, hundreds of students surrounded the alt-right activists leaving the hall, eventually chasing them off campus at a full sprint.

Ohio shooting shows livestreaming"s sinister edge

1 Dead, 15 wounded in at Cameo nightclub shooting in Cincinnati Ohio

SAN FRANCISCO The massive growth of live-streaming everything from Little League games to a giraffes birth has developed a sinister edge as murderers, rapists and terrorists have found ways to broadcast video that tech companies such as Facebook are struggling to contain.

Among the most shocking incidents yet came on Easter Sunday, when a man armed with a smartphone and a black handgun took video of himself fatally shooting a bystander on a cleveland street. The alleged killer, Steve Stephens, posted the video on his Facebook page, then took to the Facebook Live streaming service to confess his actions in real time. As of Monday evening, Stephens was still at large.

Facebook disabled Stephens profile page more than two hours after the initial posting, according to the company, but not before the video of the shooting spread across the social network and to other social media, including YouTube and Instagram. It has been viewed more than 150,000 times.

On Monday, Facebook said it was investigating why it took so long to receive reports of the video and was reviewing its procedures.

The day"s top stories delivered every morning.

Live video of violent incidents, including suicides, beheadings and torture, have gone viral, with some reaching millions of people. This summer, Facebook faced criticism after a live stream of a disabled young man being tied up, gagged and slashed with a knife stayed up for 30 minutes. Last month, two Chicago teenage boys live-streamed themselves gang-raping a teen girl.

Bound up with doing all of these terrible things is the possibility of showing thousands, possibly millions, of people that youre doing it, said Mary Anne Franks, a University of Miami law professor. She expressed doubt that Facebook could adequately monitor live videos. When it comes to Facebook Live as a product specifically, I dont think its a solvable problem, Franks said.

Shortly after Facebook launched live video streaming to the public last year, chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said he wanted a product that would support all the personal and emotional and raw and visceral ways that people communicate. The company has encouraged users to go live in casual settings, while waiting for baggage at the airport, for example, or eating at a tasty food truck.

On Monday, one day before the companys annual developer conference, questions arose again about whether Facebook had done enough to contain the video services dark side.

This is a horrific crime, and we do not allow this kind of content on Facebook, company spokeswoman Andrea Saul said in an e-mailed statement. We work hard to keep a safe environment on Facebook, and are in touch with law enforcement in emergencies when there are direct threats to physical safety.

Robert Godwin Sr.

Stephens, 37, who appeared to shoot an elderly man, uploaded three videos between 11:09 and 11:22 a.m. Sunday, Facebook said in a blog post. In the first video, he announced his intent to commit murder. Two minutes later, he uploaded the second video of the shooting. Then, at 11:22, the alleged killer took to his live-video account to broadcast himself confessing. Facebook received its first report of the killing an hour and a half later, at 12:59 p.m. The company said it disabled the account 23 minutes later.

The manhunt continued Monday, with authorities saying they had launched a nationwide search for Stephens. By the late afternoon, authorities were offering up to $50,000 for information leading to his arrest.

Steve, if youre out there listening, call someone - whether its a friend or family member or pastor. Give them a call. Theyre waiting for you to call them, Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams pleaded with Stephens at an afternoon news conference.

The incident demonstrates how Facebook is grappling with its increasingly consequential role in world affairs, as well as the fundamental challenges in policing a growing amount of highly charged content, including Islamic State beheadings that potentially inspire terrorists and fake news that has allegedly skewed the national political debate.

While Facebooks policies permit some graphic content to be posted - for example, the broadcasting of police brutality at a protest would generally be allowed - the company prohibits users from posting images or videos for sadistic pleasure or to celebrate or glorify violence.

Facebooks reluctance to play a greater gatekeeper role has also drawn the ire of critics, who say that the rush to profit off viral content and video is leading to dangerous societal outcomes.

The company raced into live video after observing the explosive popularity of platforms such as Snapchat, Meerkat and YouTube. Zuckerberg was reportedly so moved in a meeting by data that showed a staggeringly high amount of time users spend on video that he immediately put 100 of the companys top engineers on a two-month lockdown and charged them to come up with new video products, according to a profile in the Wall Street Journal.

The amount of time consumers spend watching videos online has increased more than fourfold since 2011, according to the research firm eMarketer. That video explosion, much of it being broadcast by everyday citizens and not news organizations with standards for displaying graphic content, is exposing the public to a new level of violent imagery.

Its amazing how performative people are in their cruelty, said Danielle Citron, a University of Maryland law professor who has worked with Facebook and other tech companies to block revenge p**n and prevent cyberstalking.

Yet the issue is complicated for technology companies, which have wide latitude to host content created by others without being legally responsible for it, Citron said.

In recent interviews and blog posts, Zuckerberg has acknowledged the complexity of the companys new role in the global spotlight. He hopes to amplify the good and mitigate the bad effects of the Facebook platform, he wrote earlier this year.

Since Facebook launched live-streaming, first with celebrities in late 2015 and then to the general public, there have been so many live suicides broadcast that the company decided to create a set of tools for users to flag them and alert law enforcement, a tacit acknowledgment of its gatekeeper responsibilities.

Yet in July, the company apologized and blamed a technical glitch after live video of the aftermath of the Philando Castile police shooting, which was posted by his girlfriend and caused a national outcry, was temporarily disabled by Facebook software.

In an interview last month at the companys Menlo Park, California, headquarters, Facebook executives said that the majority of live video content posted on the site is positive in nature.

Facebook Live product director Daniel Danker said, We largely rely on the community to flag live moments that are unsafe or otherwise fall outside of our community standards.

When users flag such content, it is then sent to a global team of professionals within 24 hours. But critics say that, within that length of time, inappropriate videos can be viewed millions of times.

Facebook has declined to reveal how many people and resources it invests in policing content.

In the Washington Post interview, Danker acknowledged there were obstacles to creating a safe space in real time. Its particularly challenging of course with live because theres no time to react, he said. Its happening as you see it.

Tax deadline 2017: When is it and why is it later this year?

Tax deadline

The deadline for Americans to file their annual tax returns is approaching once again, although slightly later than usual.

In great news for the nations procrastinators, the official deadline has been postponed two days.

If you"ve left it until now to start your returns, then may the odds be in your favour, and G*d speed.

Here is everything you need to know:

When is the deadline to file my tax returns?

The deadline is at 11:59 pm on Tuesday 18 April.

Why is it later this year?

traditionally the tax deadline lands on 15 April, but two events have postponed it. Firstly, 15 April was a Saturday this year. There is a rule that the deadline has to be on the following Monday if this is the case.

So why wasnt it on Monday? Because it was a holiday in the District of Columbia on Monday Emancipation Day. This marks the day 31,100 slaves living in Washington were freed.

Despite the district"s relatively minuscule population compared to the rest of the US, this further delayed the deadline, pushing it to Tuesday.

Where can I file my tax returns online?

There are three ways you can file your tax returns via the IRS website. They are listed in full here with all the details you need: https://www.irs.gov/filing/e-file-options

Could Carrie Underwood be the Predators" lucky charm this postseason?

Nashville Predators arriving back home, up 2-0 against the Chicago Blackhawks

By D"Arcy Maine | apr 13, 2017espnw.com

the nashville predators open postseason playThursday in Chicago as they take on the Blackhawks in the opening round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. And while there are thousands of fans in Tennessee getting excited for the game, one of them -- who might just be ever so slightly more famous than the rest -- is getting her spirit on with a perfect manicure and pedicure combination.

That, of course, would be the one and only Carrie Underwood, who showed off her nails -- ahem -- spirit fingers, on Instagram. The country superstar is married to Predators captain Mike Fisher and is clearly more than a little proud to cheer on the squad.

Will the gold accent nail be the good-luck charm the team needs to win Game 1? I guess we"ll just have to wait and see.

See something entertaining on social media that you think deserves to be shared? Let me know on Twitter, @darcymaine_espn.

First Take | Phil Jackson says Carmelo Anthony "would be better off somewhere else" | Apr 17, 2017

In a season littered with low points, the 2016-17 New York Knicks appeared to find rock bottom on March 12.

In Brooklyn, the 11-win Nets sank 14 3-pointers in the first half against the Knicks, effectively ending New York"s playoff hopes in 24 painful minutes. And head coach Jeff Hornacek wasn"t happy.

Hornacek lit into the Knicks in the visitors locker room of the Barclays Center, and according to people familiar with the matter, Hornacek"s diatribe was expletive-filled and delivered at a high decibel level.

It"s not uncommon for a coach to go off on his players after a pathetic showing. But what happened next was a bit surprising.

Carmelo Anthony, whose default demeanor is relaxed and easygoing, responded with anger and expletives of his own. For those accustomed to seeing anthony live by his oft-used idiom, "Stay Melo," it was jarring.

Anthony"s R-rated rant essentially questioned the direction of the entire organization, according to sources. Associate head coach Kurt Rambis fired back, calling out Anthony"s effort on defense.

Anthony responded again, but before things could devolve further, one Knick suggested that the players head back to the court and start warming up.

So they did.

Carmelo Anthony could waive his no-trade clause after his relationship with Phil Jackson turned frosty.Elsa/Getty Images

On the surface, some version of that incident has played out in dozens of NBA locker rooms over the years. But the way things unfolded on that Sunday afternoon in Brooklyn spoke to two glaring issues within the Knicks organization: a chasm between some veteran players and the coaching staff/management and, more importantly, Anthony"s uncertain future with the organization.

Over the past few weeks, Anthony has been subtly dropping hints that he"s ready to waive his no-trade clause and leave New York.

Those with knowledge of the dynamic between Anthony and the Knicks believe that, while no final decision has been made, Anthony is leaning strongly toward waiving the no-trade clause at this point. Anthony said on Wednesday night that he"d "love" to be back, but wants assurances that the Knicks are committed to winning.

No matter what is said publicly, some in the organization believe the only thing that would keep Anthony on the Knicks in 2017-18 is if owner James Dolan fires team president Phil Jackson, which is now highly unlikely, since the Knicks and Jackson quietly picked up their option on the remaining two years of his contract this spring, sources familiar with the situation told ESPN.

Jackson and the Knicks did each have the option to walk away from each other at the end of this season. It was built into the contract after Year 3 because Jackson had no interest in working through a lockout.

There may have been speculation that the standoff between Jackson and Melo would end with Jackson walking away or the Knicks declining their option on his deal, but sources told ESPN the options were picked up "awhile ago." Knicks owner James Dolan publicly reinforced his commitment to Jackson in a February 10 radio interview on The Michael Kay Show on ESPN New York 98.7 FM when he said, " he planned to honor his five-year contract with Jackson "all the way to the end."

So unless things change drastically, Jackson will have the latitude to try and move Anthony if the Knicks star chooses.

To do so, he needs to find a deal that makes sense for the 32-year-old, 10-time All Star. Jackson and the Knicks spoke to at least three teams before the deadline about trades involving Anthony, who said the team never presented him with a formal deal but admitted that he considered waiving his no-trade clause prior to the deadline.

  • After a roller-coaster season on and off the court, Carmelo Anthony said he would love to remain with the Knicks but admitted he was unsure what -- or where -- his future might be.

  • The Knicks and team president Phil Jackson quietly picked up their option on the remaining two years of his contract this spring, sources familiar with the situation told ESPN

  • Take a look back at the Knicks" season and look ahead to the offseason. Will they trade Carmelo Anthony?

2 Related

Barring something unforeseen -- such as a highly unlikely scenario in which Jackson and Anthony find common ground during their exit meeting on Thursday -- the Knicks remain committed to moving Anthony this offseason, according to league sources.

If they do execute a trade for Anthony, it will be one of the most important transactions in Jackson"s presidency. Some executives around the league believe that Anthony"s trade value would be higher if Jackson hadn"t endorsed a column that was critical of Anthony in February.

"That one was surprising," said an executive of a team who spoke to the Knicks about an Anthony trade. "I think [Jackson] really hurt himself there."

The back-and-forth between Anthony, Hornacek and Rambis in March was but one example of the instability that plagued the 2016-17 Knicks. It typified a divide caused by some players" lack of faith in the defensive game plan under associate head coach Rambis and Hornacek"s use of the triangle offense, according to sources.

Of course, the counterargument is that this year"s team could have fought for a playoff spot if players gave consistent effort on both ends of the floor. Some in the organization felt that the defensive habits of Derrick Rose and Anthony had a negative influence on the club"s young players. Both veterans finished among the bottom 15 at their respective positions in ESPN"s defensive Real Plus-Minus, a measure of a player"s contribution to his team"s defense.

Another, more subtle, sign that this team didn"t have great chemistry came on Jan. 10.

Rose returned to the Knicks" practice facility that morning and apologized to his teammates and coaches for going AWOL the night before. He said that he didn"t mean to put his teammates and coaches in a bad spot. When he was done addressing the team, no one said a word, according to people familiar with the matter. It was an odd response, and one that reinforces the notion that this team wasn"t cohesive.

Will the Knicks bring back the oft-injured Derrick Rose, who averaged 18 points in 64 games this season?AP Photo/Seth Wenig

The Knicks now face an important decision as Rose enters free agency. Should they bring back the oft-injured guard, who is coming off meniscus surgery, for a short-term deal? Or let him walk and sign or draft another point guard?

When Jackson spoke with ESPN"s Jackie MacMullan earlier in the season, it sounded as the Knicks wouldn"t hesitate to move on from Rose.

"We had the opportunity to play with Derrick and see if he does have enough left in the tank ... before we have to get into that [free] agent market again," Jackson told MacMullan.

But before Rose"s most recent injury, the Knicks hadn"t ruled out the possibility of re-signing the 28-year-old if they didn"t have any luck with other point guard targets, such as pending free agents Jrue Holiday and Jeff Teague, according to sources.

Assuming the Knicks renounce Rose"s cap hold, they should have more than $20 million to spend on free agents this summer. (That number, of course, would have been higher if Jackson hadn"t agreed to a four-year, $72 million contract for Joakim Noah, who had an eventful, yet unproductive, first season in New York.)

New York finished tied with Minnesota with the sixth-worst record in the NBA and will end up with a top-10 pick in June"s draft. With Kristaps Porzingis and w***y Hernangomez looking like two-thirds of a promising young frontcourt, Jackson and the Knicks have a chance to build something sustainable in the next two offseasons.

Despite the challenges facing the franchise -- and the fact that they"ve lost at least 50 games in each of the past three seasons -- Jackson is said to be extremely excited about the future of the Knicks.

It seems like Jackson"s version of the future is unlikely to include Anthony. But the player -- and not the team president -- will have the final say.

"I have a lot of thinking and reflecting to do," Anthony said shortly before walking out of the Knicks locker room and into an uncertain offseason. "It"s all on me at this point."
